Nostalgia’s Trickery

They say it can take many forms,

revisiting a place you once knew,

a drink, a comfort food,

an old game you spent thousands of hours on.

As quickly as you thought it, a tear in time is ripped,

taking you to a familiar place, a familiar time,

time tainted by the passing of days, hours, seconds,

of dear friends now long gone, leaving just you.

Heed my warning, for nostalgia plays dirty.

It preys on minds that long for better times,

and has no mercy.

Nostalgia is sugar-coated,

a supermarket deal too good to be true,

it’s a sale-pitch with a catch.

It’s a rocky surface not fit for foundation,

the rug that gets pulled out from under you,

and knocks you off your feet.

It’s a leaking boat, slowly sinking,

a sugar rush that leaves you to deal with the crash.

It leaves you wanting something you didn’t know you wanted,

something you didn’t know you still needed.

Beware nostalgia’s enchanting voice,

it will lure you into its depths,

caress your cheek and

wipe your tears,

leaving you longing for what once was.
